Twitter Cracks Down on Cyber Hate

Twitter on Tuesday suspended the account of Richard Spencer, one of the leading voices of the alt-right movement, amid a wider crackdown on hate speech and cyberbullying. It also expanded the use of several existing tools and changed policies to make it easier for users to fight back against abuse and harassment.

Twitter suspended the accounts of Spencer, president of the National Policy Institute, a white nationalist think tank. It also suspended the account of the organization, as well as the accounts of its online magazine and Washington Summit Publishers, which is Spencer’s book publishing firm.

Spencer referred to the move as “corporate Stalinism.”

The suspensions and larger crackdown come amid an increase in reported hate crimes since the presidential election, which was praised by a number of alt-right groups while thousands of protesters took to the streets in cities across the country.

“The Twitter rules prohibit violent threats, harassment, hateful conduct and multiple account abuse, and we will take actions on accounts violating those policies,” a Twitter spokesperson told TechNewsWorld.

Twitter’s mute button, which allows users to block certain accounts, has been enhanced to allow users to block keywords, phrases and entire conversations they consider offensive, similar to the Unfollow feature on Facebook.

Who Ya Gonna Call?

The change comes months after the widely reported onslaught against Ghostbusters star and Saturday Night Live cast member Leslie Jones. After being bombarded by racist and sexist attacks, she temporarily unplugged her own Twitter account.

“Twitter provides an opportunity for users to have more control of their experience on the site,” said Zach Fuller, paid content analyst at Midia Research. “I expect the feature to be welcomed by the Twitter community.”

The mute function for words and hashtags applies only to user notification, and the tweets will still show up in the timeline and via search, Twitter noted.

Twitter’s hateful conduct policy already bans conduct that targets users based on race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religion, age, disability or disease. The new tools give users a more direct ability to report that type of abuse going forward.

Twitter has retrained all of its support teams on the cultural and historical context of hateful conduct, and it has implemented a refresher program.

The company had received feedback from users that “people didn’t always know where or if they could report hateful conduct, especially if not targeted at them personally,” Twitter spokesperson Brielle Villablanca told TechNewsWorld.

Red Lines

Policing hate speech on a social network can be difficult, because it begins to creep into activity that is considered censorship, noted Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research.

“Eventually, artificial intelligence will make it easier,” he told TechNewsWorld, “but that is going to be further into the future — and even then, nothing is perfect, because AI needs to learn and adapt just like a human.”

Despite those concerns, cracking down on hate speech and abusive behavior will be important for social networks to avoid driving users away altogether.

Cyberbullying has been an ongoing problem on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, and it reportedly was a factor in Twitter’s inability to find a buyer last month, when companies such as Salesforce, Disney and others considered making a bid for the company.

iPhone Call Logs Easy Pickings on iCloud, Says Russian Security Firm

Russian digital forensics firm ElcomSoft on Thursday reported that Apple automatically uploads iPhone call logs to iCloud remote servers, and that users have no official way to disable this feature other than to completely switch off the iCloud drive.

The data uploaded could include a list of all calls made and received on an iOS device, as well as phone numbers, dates and times, and duration, the firm said.

Apple retains the cloud-based data for up to four months, according to ElcomSoft’s report. It includes calendars, wallet, books, notes and other data synced with iCloud. Even photos may be retained remotely longer than Apple has indicated.

Apple currently relies on a two-factor authentication system that requires an iCloud token along with an Apple ID and password, but ElcomSoft’s new Phone Breaker 6.20 software can allow law enforcement to bypass those checks.

For its part, Apple has defended the fact that the data is backed up on the cloud.

“We offer call history syncing as a convenience to our customers so that they can return calls from any of their devices,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement provided to TechNewsWorld by company rep Ryan James.

“Apple is deeply committed to safeguarding our customers’ data,” the spokesperson added. “That’s why we give our customers the ability to keep their data private. Device data is encrypted with a user’s passcode, and access to iCloud data including backups requires the user’s Apple ID and password. Apple recommends all customers select strong passwords and use two-factor authentication.”

Privacy or Security?

ElcomSoft made its announcement not so much to call attention to the potential weaknesses in Apple’s data storage practices, as to address how easily its own software can obtain the information. It is billed as a tool for law enforcement, but it’s not too hard to imagine that hackers could utilize similar tools for nefarious purposes.

“It is very concerning, as this can’t be something that is a surprise to Apple; it is baked into their design for the product and services,” said Jim Purtilo, associate professor of computer science at the University of Maryland.

“Only Apple can speak to its motive for orchestrating this behavior, but this is a way to project an image of security to consumers,” he told TechNewsWorld.

These iPhone users may believe their data are encrypted and secure, “which is mostly true, even if only on their actual device, while [Apple] is still working accommodatingly with the feds, who get tremendous value from the traffic analysis made possible by these saved data,” Purtilo added.

Standard Practices

The fact that Apple is being called out this week is somewhat notable in its own right.

“Apple doesn’t seem to be walking its talk in the sense of actually doing what it publicly claims to be doing,” noted Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

The other part of this is in the lack of transparency customers have into the process, and the fact that there is no easy way to opt out, he told TechNewsWorld.

“If you use iCloud, you’re in whether you want to be or not,” King added.

However, “as several reports on Apple’s situation mention, the company isn’t alone in syncing or saving call data,” King explained, adding that it is standard practice for U.S. carriers to retain call data for up to 12 months.

“Where Apple could run into problems is in foreign markets that restrict retention of caller data,” he said. “The company also risks some egg on its face if ElcomSoft’s contention that more data is collected and that some is retained for longer than Apple says is the case.”

Who Guards the Guards?

The fact that this information is being uploaded to the iCloud is noteworthy, given the showdown that Apple had with the FBI over its ability to obtain information from an iPhone belonging to Syed Rizwan Farook, who carried out last December’s terrorist attack in San Bernardino.

Farook’s phone was protected cryptographically. Apple challenged more than 11 orders to assist in providing access to the phone, issued by the United States district courts under the All Writs Act of 1789.

The question is whether the FBI showdown was necessary, based on ElcomSoft’s findings. Much of the data may have been on the iCloud and hence accessible.

“If most users rely on iCloud services, then police largely don’t need the actual device in order to investigate someone; the data have already been disclosed for far more convenient access by whoever asks,” explained Purtilo.

“Consumers should be so lucky that only the police are accessing their data; in this news, we more or less need to presume other less upstanding groups have been accessing the data too,” he added.

For the vast majority of users, this may be a nonissue, noted Pund-IT’s King.

“Most criminals and ne’er-do-wells probably know enough not to use their personal phones for conducting illegal business,” he suggested.

“How threatening the practice may be is hard to say, but with Apple actively trying to pitch its products for enterprise applications and use cases, companies considering deploying iPhones and iPads may want to question how their employees’ call data is being collected and secured,” King added. “Personal communication is the lifeblood of many businesses, to the point that any threat of injury and hemorrhage should be avoided.”

Twitter Adds GIF Keyboard Support on Devices Running Android 7.1 Nougat

Twitter seems to be the first to support GIF keyboard on devices running Android 7.1 Nougat. The GIF keyboard support was added by Google in Android 7.1.1 and was promoted as “an update to Nougat.” With the new feature, the GIF images started appearing in the keyboard on supported apps. Google’s Gboard was the first keyboard app to enable the GIF keyboard support.

Twitter Adds GIF Keyboard Support on Devices Running Android 7.1 Nougat

The new GIF keyboard support is however limited to devices running the Android 7.1 Nougat and it also requires users to run the latest Twitter beta 6.33.0-beta.556 version. The feature was first reported by a Reddit user who pointed, “Twitter for Android now let’s you search for GIFs through the Gboard.”

It’s worth noting that Android 7.1.1 update added GIF keyboard support though it wasn’t system-wide change and was required to be enabled on an app basis. Google had confirmed that GIF keyboard support will be available through Google Allo, Google Messenger, and Hangouts. Twitter is one of the first non-Google app to implement the change – after Telegram in early January. Considering that the GIF keyboard support is available on beta version of Twitter, we can expect it to be available to broader audience in upcoming app update. The new GIF keyboard feature works with both tweets and direct messages (DMs) in Twitter for Android, similar to the existing GIF button. The new GIF keyboard support will be a useful add-on to the existing pack of GIF images already available in Twitter for Android via Giphy.

Twitter recently started showing view count on videos for some users as it continued to experiment with video related features on its platform.

Apart from GIF keyboard, Android 7.1.1 Nougat update also added new emojis that reflected gender equality.

DIPP Says No Decision Yet on Apple’s Demand for Concessions

The government has not taken a final decision yet on the concessions being sought by US iPhone maker Apple for setting up a manufacturing unit in India, a top official said on Monday.

Secretary in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) Ramesh DIPP Says No Decision Yet on Apple's Demand for Concessions said that Apple has submitted certain demands for the government’s consideration.

“We had a meeting of all the concerned ministries and departments (on those demands) and we have asked them to look at those issues and take a view. No ministry has yet taken a final decision on any of those. But we are in touch with them,” Abhishek told reporters here.

He said the government supports all manufacturing, including value manufacturing, in the country by companies. “So we would definitely like to promote this. So we are coordinating response from all the concerned ministries but no final view has been taken yet on any of those,” he said.

The secretary also clarified that the government does not take any policy decision for a particular company.

“Decision is taken for everyone. So no company specific decision can be taken,” he said, adding that DIPP has forwarded the requests of Apple to the Department of Revenue also.

On January 25, Apple Inc indicated to the government that it is ready with a blueprint to begin manufacturing iPhones in India, but wants fiscal concessions, including Customs duty waiver on import of components.

Apple executives made a detailed presentation on its road map for setting up a manufacturing unit in India to an inter-ministerial group headed by Abhishek. With sales tapering in the US and China, Apple is eyeing India – the fastest growing smartphone market in the world – and looking to set up a local manufacturing unit to cut costs.

It makes devices through contract manufacturers. Besides exemption from the Customs duty on imports of components and equipment for 15 years, Apple wants relaxation in the mandated 30 percent local sourcing of components.

In a communication to the government, the Cupertino-based technology major has asked for several tax and other incentives, including long-term duty exemptions, to enter the manufacturing sector in India.

Currently, the government provides support by way of benefits under the Modified Special Incentive Package Scheme (MSIPS) to boost electronic manufacturing.

The company sells its products through Apple-owned retail stores in countries like China, Germany, the US, the UK and France, among others. It has no wholly-owned store in India and sells its products through distributors such as Redington and Ingram Micro.
