Computers in the Design World

Computer Aided is a term used on a regular basis these days. When you wake up, eat breakfast, drive to work, and relax at the end of the day there’s some form of computer to aid you. It could be something like Amazon’s Alexa, your car’s onboard computer, or the choice of movies on your streaming service.

Computers in the Design World

In fact, computers have aided some part of society for decades. Much of this has taken place in the worlds of design and manufacturing. Actually, they can be combined into one world, for a product can’t be manufactured until it’s designed. Two long-standing programs have helped designers and plant managers get through these phases with little difficulty. They are Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM).

What CAD Does

You can manufacture a product without a plan. That’s where CAD shines. It creates a 2D or 3D design and documents its creation process. As long as the programs are compatible, CAD software can transfer the required schematics to the CAM program so it can start configuring its processes.

CAD’s benefits are many. First, it increases the productivity of the architect or engineer. Second, the design information is more detailed with better quality. Third, as the design library increases, it creates a database for manufacturing.

What CAM Does

CAM software takes the CAD design and programs the machine tools and related processes to properly produce a new product. Normally, a demo is created in order to check for flaws or glaring defects in the design. Those are corrected in CAD and sent back to the CAM software for another round of production. Every tweak made is recorded for future references.

CAD CAM Training

There are any number of CAD CAM training sites on the internet. Companies like Sierra CAD/CAM offer classes for any skill level. See if you’re the right fit for either program by viewing their website and the classes they offer. Soon enough, you’ll be on your way to becoming a computer aided designer or manufacturer.
